Mission Statement

We aim to promote the holistic development of learners. We, the community, the pupils, and members of the school governing body must assist the educators in providing sound morals and principles for adulthood so that all learners contribute to the development and growth of the self, the community and the country.

‘SAVE SOIL’ CAMPAIGN

To motivate the support of 3.5 billion people across the world, engage governments to initiate policy-driven action to revitalize soil - and halt further degradation. Our school's participation in this global movement will be alongside schools in all parts of the world. The soil legacy we leave behind will be for the current generation of learners.

Therefore, learners of Dr A. D Lazarus participated and shared the message “Save Our Soil” through Music and dance: around the theme of Saving Our Soil. A Save Soil Anthem has been launched which was taught to learners and they have also written a song which will be performed by learners and recorded by the ADL Conscious Planet Team (Grades 8-11).Letters from the children to the President: expressing their appreciation and sharing their support for the government to “Save Our Soil”. This was incorporated in English lessons in which the skills of writing a formal letter were highlighted, in Grade 8 and 9.

Copies of these letters will be sent to COP15 which is being hosted in the Ivory Coast. This initiative hopes to deliver a message on the global stage from Africa and drive the development of policies in Africa to combat desertification and rejuvenate soil. Four of our learners, together with their teachers Dr R. Mahadev and Mrs E. Maharaj also presented a 15 minute “reach out to community” via the Radio Station Megazone on Earth Day, the 22 April 2022. This participation will be captured and shared online with all schools participating globally. Parents’ consent in this regard was acquired. Dr A. D Lazarus Secondary showcased their school as part of the historic global change to the way we treat soil to ensure there will be food for our future generations.

BRIEF HISTORY

Dr A. D Lazarus Secondary (ADL) was established in 1992 which was initially referred to as Reservoir Hills No 2. On the 13th January, the staff and learners of Clare Hills Secondary moved into this school and it was then named in honour of one of the finest academics that served the cause of education in our country, Dr A. D Lazarus (1903-1988). He was a respected as the “Doyen of Indian Education” nationally and internationally.

The first Principal of Dr A.D Lazarus Secondary was Mr S. Govender. The maximum holding capacity of the school was 750 learners. Dr A. D Lazarus Secondary was first of its kind in South Africa, built for the integration of abled-bodied learners and physically challenged learners into the mainstream schooling. Special parking and toilets for the physically challenged were built to accommodate learners. The school comprises of a single double storey block (Administration) and several single storey blocks in the rest of the school. The campus is extensive and is barrier free with wide doors enabling the use of wheelchairs.

The school was initially built to accommodate learners from R. P Moodley Primary School for physically challenged learners to complete the secondary school education. The most celebrated physically challenged learners to complete their matric at Dr A. D Lazarus Secondary were:

Siphamandla Gumbi – He was confined to a wheelchair after being paralysed by polio. Siphamandla represented South Africa at two Olympic Games in wheelchair basketball.
Rakesh Soni – He was a talented, self-taught musician and an exceptional flute player. He recorded several CD’s. It is unfortunate that he has now passed.
Vernon Vadivelu – He was a talented and exceptional artist. He lectured at the Durban University of Technology. It is unfortunate that he also passed.
Lucelle Govender – She was unable to use her arms and resorted to use her mouth to hold a pen and write beautifully.

Gradually, the enrolment of learners with physical challenges ceased at ADL, as R.P Moodley School was able to accommodate children with several challenges. Over the decades, Dr A. D Lazarus Secondary School has produced outstanding academics and talented learners who hold key positions in the medical and corporate worlds.

Message from Principle

Greetings to all stakeholders of Dr. A.D.Lazarus Secondary. It is my pleasure to welcome you as part of the ADL family. As a progressive principal it is my philosophy to ensure that all stakeholders are working together towards the vision of the school: “The creation of a positive learning environment for teaching and learning and to strive for the attainment of excellence”. The core focus of this school is teaching and learning. The energy of parents, educators and learners must be directed to ensuring that our children perform to their maximum. There is no room for mediocrity.

Over the years Dr A.D.Lazarus Secondary has produced good results and attained good quality passes but as a leader I believe we need to aim higher. My expectation is move towards getting a 100 % pass rate in all the grades. One of the major challenges in the past was getting parental support with regard to attendance of meetings, payment of school fees and general communication. In order for the school to be the best it can be, it is imperative that we have the co-operation of parents. Therefore I resolve to place much emphasis on achieving this.

As the impact of Covid-19 decreases, it opens avenues to introduce more co-curricular and extracurricular events. Such activities promote the holistic development of the child and most assuredly these activities will slowly be introduced during my tenure.

Our school is thirty years old and the infrastructure and the amenities of the school have really suffered. As a proud ADL alma-mater, parent, educator and community supporter, we need to come together to ensure that we have the best and most safe environment for our children to succeed. I implore you to assist the school through your skills, knowledge, networks and finances to add value and make this school a home for our learners.

The motto of the school is “Surge et Supera” – to rise and conquer. We see this as a mission to develop strong, responsible and accountable leaders who will be able to carry our beloved country into a bright future.
